Eye Creams
Is Eye Cream Necessary?
The question of whether eye cream is necessary is highly debated. Some people claim that their eye cream is liquid gold that vanished their fine lines and found them a husband, while others don't think there's any need for eye-specific products and that all eye creams are price discrimination. Depending on your eye concern, I think eye creams may or may not be necessary for you. The skin around your eyes is thinner than the skin on the rest of your face (actually it’s the thinnest on your body!) and this is why it's more prone to fine lines and dark circles. In theory, any moisturizing product that's safe enough to put on your face should also be safe enough to put around your eye. So, applied around the eye area, any of your creams can be used as an eye cream to combat fine lines. But for an eye concern like puffiness, you may need an eye-specific product to target these issues.
Under eye Dark Circles
Dark circles under eyes can be a real drag. Not being able to leave the house without an under eye concealer unless you want to look absolutely exhausted is no persons ideal eye situation. If you have a fair complexion and have purplish dark circles, those are just the tissues and blood vessels showing from underneath and unfortunately, there's not much you can do about it with eye creams or any topical products. The best way to get rid of dark under eye circles is to get an adequate amount of sleep. However, if you have a darker complexion, your dark circles may be due to excess melanin and can be addressed with eye creams that include brightening ingredients like niacinamide or vitamin C.
under eye Fine Lines
Fine lines under the eyes are caused by a loss of moisture and collagen in the skin. To diminish the appearance of under eye fine lines, use product with hydrating and moisturizing ingredients to plump those fine lines and diminish their appearance. For aging skin with deeper fine lines, eye creams may be worth a try. But for the younger folk, or those who just can't justify spending $30 for a 20ml tube of eye cream, the other moisturizing products in your routine would be just fine to use on your under-eye. I often just tap a little extra face moisturizer underneath my eyes.
Under Eye Puffiness
Under eye puffiness can be caused by UV damage, allergies, lack of sleep, or edema. Some of these obviously should be addressed by a doctor but as far as topical treatments go, look for eye creams with vasoconstricting ingredients like caffeine that can reduce puffiness.
How to Apply Eye Cream
The skin around our eyes is the thinnest on our bodies and the most susceptible to damage so it’s best to apply eye creams as gently as possible. Try applying your eye creams in a tapping motion with your ring fingers and avoid using swiping motions that will pull on the eye’s delicate skin.
